REMEMBERING NESTOR SAMYCIA, FOUNDER OF DESCO COATINGS

A LIFE OF PURPOSE AND FAMILY

We share the passing of Nestor Samycia with deep sadness and gratitude for a life well lived. Nestor passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Throughout his life, he led with compassion, humility, and quiet strength. Because of this, he left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Above all else, Nestor valued family. He shared 58 loving years with his wife, Vicki, and together they built a strong foundation rooted in care and respect. In addition, he took immense pride in his children Daryl (Connie), Terri (Michael), and Chris (Shelley). His role as a grandfather brought him great joy, especially while spending time with Ryan, Daniel, Sarah, Laura, Adam, and Alan. Beyond his immediate family, he remained closely connected to his siblings, extended family, and lifelong friends.

BUILDING DESCO COATINGS OF ALBERTA

Nestor founded Desco Coatings of Alberta Ltd. with a clear vision built on craftsmanship, integrity, and accountability. From the beginning, he believed that doing things the right way mattered more than doing them quickly. As a result, Desco grew into a trusted name within the Edmonton construction industry. Even more meaningful to him, however, was seeing his children and grandchildren carry forward the company he worked so hard to build.

In addition to leading Desco, Nestor actively contributed to the broader construction community. He served as a director with the Edmonton Construction Association and earned respect through consistent leadership rather than words alone. Over time, his reputation became synonymous with fairness, professionalism, and long-term relationships.

A LEGACY THAT CONTINUES

Outside of work, Nestor enjoyed time at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, where he built lasting friendships and remained an active member for many years. More importantly, he approached every part of life with kindness and sincerity. Because of this, his influence continues to guide Desco’s values today. The company’s focus on family, safety, and quality workmanship directly reflects the principles he lived by.

He loved, was well loved, and certainly will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nestor may be made to Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

As per Nestor’s wishes, a private family service was held. A celebration of life for Nestor will be held for family and friends at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club (9450 Groat Road; Edmonton) on Sunday, January 25, 2015 between 1-3 pm.
