CREATIVE CONCRETE: DESCO’S CUSTOM SINK

At Desco Coatings of Alberta, we have always believed that concrete is more than a building material it’s a creative medium with virtually unlimited design potential. As leaders in custom concrete solutions, we’re constantly experimenting with new techniques, materials, and artistic approaches to push the boundaries of what concrete can do.

This winter, we took on a unique in-house project: creating a fabric-formed, glow-in-the-dark concrete sink for our shop bathroom. Instead of buying a standard sink off the shelf, we saw an opportunity to explore new concepts, test innovative materials, and showcase the artistic side of our industry.

Innovation Through Fabric-Formed Concrete

The idea began with Ryan Spotowski, son of one of our project managers, who had previously experimented with fabric-formed concrete during his university studies. This method uses flexible fabric molds to create organic, flowing shapes not something you typically see in the concrete world.

Working through different mix designs, mold structures, and form concepts, we refined the process until we were ready to build a fully engineered, functional sink.

Glow-in-the-Dark Creativity: A True Desco Touch

But this wasn’t going to be an ordinary concrete sink. At Desco, our team is known for creativity and craftsmanship, so we pushed the design further. We incorporated:

  • Blue concrete for a bold, eye-catching base
  • Glass chips for texture and light refraction
  • Glow-in-the-dark aggregate that makes the sink come alive at night

The finished product is a one-of-a-kind functional art piece something you won’t find in any store and a perfect example of Desco’s commitment to innovation in the concrete industry.
