WINNER OF THE 2015 CONCRETE SURFACES POLISHING AWARD FOR THE BEST COMMERCIAL PROJECT
DESCO RECEIVES 2015 CONCRETE POLISHING AWARD
Desco, an Edmonton polished concrete contractor, proudly received the 2015 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award for Best Commercial Project. The award recognized our work at the Doublestar Drilling Offices in Acheson, an industrial area just outside Edmonton. This project stood out because Desco corrected a failed polished concrete floor installed by another contractor. We delivered a long-lasting concrete solution that exceeded expectations and restored confidence in the finished floor.
CORRECTING A FAILED POLISHED CONCRETE FLOOR
The original design called for a black-dyed polished concrete floor with minimal aggregate exposure. The previous installer applied the dye and sealer improperly, creating uneven color and an unacceptable finish. The owner hired Desco to correct the floor and deliver the quality originally expected. We began by understanding the owner’s goals and explaining the long-term maintenance challenges of black polished concrete floors. After reviewing options, the owner chose to eliminate the black dye.
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND EXECUTION
Desco mobilized immediately using our extensive grinding equipment and polishing diamond inventory. Our project management team provided same-day options to keep the project moving efficiently. We created a mock-up to determine the required grinding depth and confirm costs, timelines, and visual expectations. Testing showed full dye removal required deeper grinding to expose large aggregate. Using planetary grinders and precision edging tools, our crew removed all dye and sealer, revealing natural concrete tones with consistent aggregate exposure.
DETAIL WORK AND FINAL FINISH
We applied an environmentally friendly acrylic grout mixed with recycled grinding dust to fill surface voids. This process improved clarity, durability, and overall visual consistency. We filled control joints full depth with black polyurea elastomer filler, selected to complement interior accents. Polishing occurred after painting and door installation, requiring careful protection of finished surfaces. Our team installed temporary coverings to safeguard surrounding finishes throughout the process.
