Desco is proud to announce that we are the 2016 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award recipient for the best educational concrete polishing project for our work at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Centre for Applied Technology, NAIT CAT, in Edmonton, Alberta. This award marks the third year in a row where Desco has been recognized for our achievements in concrete polishing after winning in the best commercial project category in both 2015 and 2014. Desco is the only award recipient in Canada. The NAIT CAT is developed as a centre of excellence for simulated learning, which allows students to experience...

Original Desco flooring lasts for over 30 years in a hospital

Seamless Epoxy Floor from 1982 still in great condition Hospitals require flooring solutions that exceed expectations and allow for hygienic practices. Desco originally installed the floor in 1982 for Forest Construction and Peter Dawson, over 30 years ago. The original seamless floor and integrated base in the kitchen were maintained regularly and still functioning to a high standard. However, renovations to the space and the moving of walls required a flooring retrofit. Rather than patching small areas, it was decided to refinish the entire floor. One of the installers who originally trowelled this floor is still working with Desco and...

Concrete Polishing Testing: The Importance of Quantitative Measurements

In the concrete polishing industry, quantitative testing is replacing qualitative testing. By having consistent objective measurements, a client can be assured of consistent results. Since concrete polishing is a relatively new industry, there is a need for consistent education as to what makes a floor “good”. But even with education and training, looking at floor may be deceiving since appearances can be extremely qualitative and do not have measurable data to reinforce their findings. What “looks good” to someone may be a disaster when inspected with quantitative tools in a non-subjective manner. The quantitative data from measuring qualities such as...

Winner of the 2015 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award for the best Commercial Project

Desco is proud to announce that we are the 2015 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award recipient for the best commercial concrete polishing project for our work at the Doublestar Drilling Offices in Acheson; an industrial area just outside of Edmonton. Desco rescued the floor from a poor quality polished concrete finish installed by another contractor by providing a concrete long lasting solution that exceeded expectations. Desco was contacted to restore a polished concrete floor after the original installer failed to meet the owner’s expectations. The floor for the commercial office was originally to be dyed black with an acetone based dye...

Why is a Concrete Surface Profile so Important?

A few years back, we had a blog post on concrete surface profiles, explaining the differences between them. You can find it here: http://www.descoalberta.com/blog/archives/2013/05/13/what-is-a-concrete-surface-profile/ . However, we still have people wondering why is a concrete surface profile so important? There are many reasons to mechanically abrade a floor to create a surface profile, from cleaning the floor to opening the surface of the concrete, but one of the more important ones is to increase the surface area that the material has to bond to the floor. The image above shows the different amounts of surface for a coating to bond...

Winner of the 2014 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award for the best Commercial Project

Desco is proud to announce that we are the 2014 Concrete Surfaces Polishing Award recipient for the best commercial project for our polished concrete at the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton. At the recreation centre, Desco polished approximately 23,500 square feet of concrete to a Class B Level 4 (salt-and-pepper depth with a high gloss) finish. The concrete polishing was throughout the main walkways and entryways, the feature stairs, a feature wall, benches, and some of the columns. Polishing the walls and columns proved to be quite the challenge in order to fill all the pockets and bug-holes in...

What is Shotblasting?

At Desco, we shotblast a lot of floors. But what is shotblasting? Shotblasting is where you clean and abrade the surface of the floor in a contained way to ensure that your coatings will properly bond with the substrate. Shotblasting impacts the floor with steel shot, similar to bb’s from a shotgun, at a high rate of speed. The machine then removes the dust from the steel shot before reusing the steel shot to continue cleaning the floor. The whole process is nearly dust free, especially when compared to sandblasting. The image below shows the process in a high traffic...

Spring is here! Has your Basement sprung a leak?

Now that the sun is shining and we finally have some nice temperatures after another long Edmonton winter, have you noticed any leaks in your basement? As the ground is thawing and shifting with the changing temperatures and spring runoff, you might notice a small trickle coming in through your foundation. Edmonton is especially bad for this since many areas were built on former swamps. This little bit of water may not seem like a big deal, but it will cause mold and could lead to bigger problems down the road. The two options of dealing with this are to...

Brace yourself: Winter is coming

It’s that time of year when winter is coming and we begin to think about the blowing snow and disappearing sun. What we should be thinking about is our building envelope: are there any leaks or drips that need to be addressed before it’s too late to do so. We recently had a client who had these very thoughts. The walkway and parking area over top of their retail space had a few cracks that needed to be repaired. There was no leaking inside as far as they could tell, but they didn’t want to go through a winter and...

Avoid Damaged Floors: 5 Easy Ways to Keep Polished Concrete Looking New

Polished concrete is a low maintenance floor, especially when compared to vinyl composite tile (VCT) and resilient sheet flooring (RST). There’s no need to wax it, no seams to re-weld, no top scrubbing, and it lasts longer when you properly take care of it. Check out these tips to keep your polished concrete floor looking it’s best. 1. Clean up spills quickly Floors that we install will have a sealer that prevents staining, but it’s still good practice to clean up and spills as soon as you can. 2. Use floor mats If dirt, sand, and grit are left to...

What is a concrete surface profile?

The most important step in creating a quality floor is the preparation. And for the proper bonding of any coating or overlay, you need to properly prepare the floor with the proper concrete surface profile. But what is a concrete surface profile? A concrete surface profile, known as a CSP, is a standardized measure for the ‘roughness’ of a surface that is defined by the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI). A very rough surface will have a high CSP number, such as CSP 9. A very smooth surface with almost no preparation at all will be a CSP 1. The...

We can provide you with the proper solution for your problem. Do you have an environment exposed to corrosive chemicals? How about a showroom for your new office? Or what if you just want something affordable that will last? No matter what your requirement is, we’ll take care of it. We like our competition: They keep giving us great business

“I’m not happy with the floor that was just installed.” These words can make a contractors heart skip a beat. There is nothing worse than an unsatisfied client asking you to come have a second look at a floor. Unless you didn’t install that floor; your competition did. It seems that every week we receive more and more calls about clients who have paid for a contractor to supply and install a floor and they’re unhappy with the result. That’s not to say that the contractor did a bad job. More often than not, the client just didn’t know what...

The Ultimate Vacuum: The Secret Behind The Best Coatings

Time and time again, we stress that the most important part of any job is the prep. Even the best products by the best manufacturers applied by the best applicators will not live up to our standards if the floor is prepared poorly. There’s nothing worse than investing a large amount of money in a floor, only to have it peel off a month later. We don’t want to chance that on your floor. Having a floor fail is expensive, unnecessary, and embarrassing. That’s why we only use the best equipment to provide you with the best possible floor. What’s...

Custom Concrete Design: Fabric Formed Glow In The Dark Sink

Whew, what a mouthful. What is a blue fabric formed glow in the dark concrete sink? It’s a cutting edge decorative concrete sink for our bathroom at the shop. We had some time this winter to experiment a bit with some new ideas in the concrete industry and we were in need of a sink. Rather than just going to a home renovation store and picking up a standard sink, we got creative and tried out some new products and techniques. Ryan Spotowski, son to one of the project managers, had been experimenting with fabric forming concrete in university and...

Top 10 things to look for in a contractor

1. A Certificate of Recognition (COR) for their safety manual and program Does the contractor have a current Certificate of Recognition (COR) for their safety manual and safety program? Occupational Health and Safety must have certified their safety program within the past three years for it to be valid. What steps are done to ensure their safety and your safety? If you see something being done unsafe or you’re unsure of what specific tasks are required to complete a job, you should ask a contractor to see his Safe Work Practices and Safe Work Policies. 2. Age of the company...

The Annual World of Concrete Trip

With the start of the new year comes the annual trip to the World of Concrete in Las Vegas. With over 1,800 companies and suppliers occupying over 900,000 square feet at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the World of Concrete is the destination to connect with other professionals in the industry. This year Desco will be sending down four employees to learn about the newest techniques, products, materials, and equipment in the concrete industry. We don’t just send down the company management either. Although Daryl Samycia will be there, so will our youngest project manager, shop foreman, and seamless epoxy...

Why attention to detail matters

Most people are surprised to hear that their concrete floor is not as stable as they think it is. Over time, concrete will shift, settle, and crack. While a micro-crack may not be a concern if you have a carpet overlay, it is if you have a poorly done epoxy floor. Some companies in our industry will install a thin film floor that is only a few microns thick, meaning that even the smallest of cracks will show through the coating and ruin the floor. Additionally, their prep is often just a quick grind or acid etch. These quick and...

Have you checked out our base?

When asked “what makes Desco different?”, one of the first things that comes to mind is our base. That may seem a little strange, but the base is one of the most important aspects of the floor. Found most often on our seamless epoxy floors and polyurethane concrete floors, the base runs along where the floor meets the wall, carrying up the wall anywhere from 2"-6". The base is then finished with a cove detail, as seen in our floor at L Y Cairns School, or in a cant detail, as seen in our floor in the hospital kitchen. The...
